CAN in a tire pressure monitoring system
Source: CAN Newsletter March 2003
Tire inflation pressure is an important factor for road safety, ride quality, tire life and the vehicle’s fuel consumption. Despite the evident importance of being able to monitor tire pressures during the journey and the extensive development work that has been devoted to such a system, it has only recently proved possible to design and manufacture one that is suitable for series production. The Beru company supplies the only tire pressure monitoring system approved by German automobile manufacturers, which is capable of avoiding tire failures and maintaining the vehicle’s mobility. Current series-production systems perform the following tasks:
- Continuous tire pressure monitoring both during the journey and at a standstill
- Early warning for the driver of pressure loss, tires running at too low a pressure and tire failure
- Prevention of errors when setting the nominal tire pressure value and when inflating tires
- Automatic identification and location of the vehicle’s wheels
- System and component diagnosis in vehicle production and in the repair shop.
