CIP Safety allows safety devices to co-exist with common control devices on the same CIP Network, either with or without a Safety PLC. In this environment, safety sensors can operate alongside variable speed drives, safety controllers with standard PLCs and proximity switches.
To clarify the additional safety requirements, an existing railway standard (EN 50159-1:2001) was used and later extended by the Germany Safety Bus committee. This provided design guidelines to safety network developers to allow their networks and safety devices to be certified to IEC 61508.
