A word from the CiA Managing Director

Beginning of July, the first CAN XL plugfest took place. Bosch, Fraunhofer IPMS, Infineon, and Vector tested their first CAN XL IP cores.

The first test set-up was a bus-line topology with an overall length of 19 m. There were connected five nodes plus some tools – only listening. The bit-rate was increased from 1 Mbit/s to 10 Mbit/s using busloads up to 100 %. The tests were performed with and without error signaling. Furthermore, the attendees tested also a mixed transmission of data frames: Classical CAN, CAN FD, and CAN XL. An interesting test was the simultaneous transmission of CAN XL and CAN FD frames using different bit-rates in the dataphase. CAN XL frames were sent with 10 Mbit/s and CAN FD frames with 2 Mbit/s. In all these basic tests, no problems occurred.

NXP demonstrated during the plugfest its double-star topology test network with eight CAN XL nodes running at 10 Mbit/s. Using one star with four NXP nodes and connecting two nodes from Fraunhofer IPMS as well as one node from Infineon, the achieved bit-rate was also 10 Mbit/s. In this test set-up, one stub was about 6 m, the others between 1 m and 2 m. In another test, the NXP single-star was linked to two Fraunhofer IPMS nodes running at 20 Mbit/s. Of course, all these tests were made under laboratory conditions (room temperature).

From my point-of-view, this was a very successful CAN XL plugfest. The next step is to test the behavior of the nodes, when there are transmitted corrupted frames on the CAN XL network. We will do this in the next plugfest.

The CiA 610-1 CAN XL data link layer and physical coding sub-layer specification is in the CiA internal quality check and will be available for members as Draft Specification Proposal, soon. After one year, it will be reviewed again and then released as Draft Specification, which can be purchased also by non-members. In parallel, the CAN XL specification will be submitted to ISO for international standardization. It is intended to update the current ISO 11898-1:2015 standard and to add the CAN XL protocol.


High-available CAN communication

The CiA Technical Committee has decided to inaugurate a new group with the scope to specify high-available CAN networks. This includes bus-line redundancy, node redundancy, etc. CiA office is going to organize a free-of-charge workshop, open also for non-members to collect requirements and to discuss specification options. DIN 4630: body builder network for commercial vehicles

This German standard proposal in English language has successfully passed the draft ballot and is now prepared for the final voting. It specifies a CAN-based network for commercial vehicles (trucks and trailers) connecting add-on devices called body application units (BAU). They can communicate via J1939 or CANopen to the in-vehicle gateway unit (IGU), the telematics gateway unit (TGU), and to the fleet management unit (FMU). There are standardized different kinds of BAUs including those controlling tail-lifts, vehicle-mounted cranes, heating and cooling equipment, etc. DIN 4630 is also the base for the DIN 14704 standard, which specifies the IGU for fire fighting trucks. CiA is going to held a 1-hour webinar in October.

Call for experts: Review of CiA 456

The CiA 456 specifies a CANopen interface profile for configurable network components such as Classical CAN bridges and Classical CAN switches. This document should be extended to support also the configuration of CAN FD and CAN XL ports. Companies offering bridges/switches, routers, or gateways with CAN FD and/or CAN XL ports should contact CiA office by email to be invited to an inaugural meeting of the interest group (IG) profile’s task force (TF) configurable network components.
